A plain-English guide to DocuSign eSignature for Salesforce: what the managed package does, which DocuSign plan and Salesforce edition it needs, how envelopes, templates and merge fields work, what the integration really costs per user, and the limits your admin and reps will hit. Then a look at what changes when proposals and signatures run natively inside Salesforce.
One sends finished documents for signature from your records. The other builds, sends, tracks and signs the proposal inside them.
Yes, and it is the most downloaded eSignature app on the AppExchange. DocuSign eSignature for Salesforce is a managed package that adds a Send with DocuSign button to Accounts, Contacts, Cases, Contracts, Opportunities, Leads and custom objects. Reps pick an envelope template, Salesforce data merges into the document, recipients sign, and the completed PDF is saved back to the record. What it does not do is build the document: DocuSign signs what you bring, and generating documents from Salesforce data needs DocuSign Gen or another tool. The integration is priced on top of an eSignature plan, and DocuSign’s own pricing page lists Salesforce document generation under its Enhanced plans, which are quoted by sales.
A rep clicks Send with DocuSign on a supported record, adds documents and recipients manually, from a template, or dynamically from the record’s contacts and users, then continues into DocuSign’s tagger to place fields and send. Envelope and recipient status is tracked back in Salesforce in real time.
Admins build envelope templates that pre-load documents, recipients, custom fields and Salesforce merge fields. Merge fields pull values from the record into the document and, with the Writeback option, push a signer’s changes back to Salesforce when the envelope completes.
When every recipient has signed, DocuSign saves the completed document to the Salesforce record, with status updates delivered through DocuSign Connect. A clicks-not-code wizard lets admins add custom buttons to any object without Apex.
Salesforce Professional, Enterprise, Unlimited, Developer and Performance editions are supported. On the DocuSign side you need an eSignature plan that permits the Salesforce integration: the AppExchange listing prices the app from $30 per user per month, and DocuSign’s pricing page places “Generate documents from within Salesforce” under its Enhanced plans. Confirm the exact bundle with DocuSign sales before you install.
Install DocuSign eSignature for Salesforce from the AppExchange, in a sandbox first. The install itself takes under an hour; independent implementation guides budget two to four weeks for configuration, testing and rollout.
Launch the DocuSign Setup wizard, log in with a DocuSign administrator and authorise the connection. Users are then added or auto-provisioned to the DocuSign account from Salesforce.
Assign the DocuSign administrator, sender and user permission sets. Note that DocuSign checks field access for merge fields at the Profile level, so a user granted field access only through a Permission Set can be blocked from generating a template.
Use the clicks-not-code wizard to create Send with DocuSign buttons for each object you send from and add them to the Lightning page layouts, along with the DocuSign Envelope Status related list.
For each document type, create an envelope template: attach the document, define recipients and roles, add Salesforce merge fields and any custom fields, and decide whether senders can edit the pre-built envelope. Repeat per object.
Enable DocuSign Connect so envelope status and completed documents flow back to Salesforce, and switch on Writeback for any merge fields a signer may change. Test each object end to end on desktop and mobile.
DocuSign’s integration is mature and reliable. These are the places where it leaves sales teams wanting more, drawn from DocuSign’s own documentation and pricing.
You bring a finished document. Generating a proposal, quote or contract from Salesforce data needs DocuSign Gen (a separate per-user subscription) or another document tool, which puts a second product in the workflow.
DocuSign plans and pricingDocuSign’s pricing page lists “Generate documents from within Salesforce” under Enhanced plans only, which are custom-quoted for 50-plus users. Standard and Business Pro are self-serve; the Salesforce app is priced on top.
DocuSign plans and pricingStandard and Business Pro include up to 100 envelopes per user per year. A rep sending two agreements a week runs out in half a year, and Salesforce sends count.
DocuSign plans and pricingValues merge as plain text, so right alignment and currency formatting can be lost, checkbox writeback needs a custom-field workaround, and the envelope status field is text rather than a picklist, so it cannot be translated or used cleanly in picklist-driven automation.
DocuSign community, SalesforceField access for merge fields is evaluated against the user’s Profile, not Permission Sets, which cuts across how most orgs grant access today.
DocuSign community, SalesforceTemplates, branding, Connect and users are managed in DocuSign; buttons, layouts and permission sets in Salesforce. Independent guides budget two to four weeks to configure and estimate $70 to $90 per user per month once the base plan, the Salesforce app and Gen are combined.
Vantage Point review, 2026Fair note: DocuSign is the most widely recognised eSignature brand, with the broadest compliance coverage and a Salesforce app that has matured over more than a decade. This page is about the specific case of a sales team that wants proposals, quotes and signatures to live on the Salesforce record without a second product for document generation.
SalesSign installs as a managed package and runs through Salesforce Canvas and Lightning Web Components. A rep opens an Opportunity, Quote, Account or custom object, launches the builder and the proposal is created, edited, sent, tracked and signed without leaving the page. No separate generation product, no tagger in another tab.

Start from the launching record and follow lookups up to five relationships deep, pull Opportunity Products or CPQ lines into pricing tables, and format dates, numbers and currencies as you build. What the rep sees in the builder is what the customer signs.

Every send, view, signature and the final PDF land on the Salesforce record as they happen, ready for reports and Flows. Tracking sessions show which pages each recipient read and for how long. Envelopes are included monthly on Pro and Max and topped up as you go, with no annual allowance to ration.

The AppExchange listing shows DocuSign eSignature for Salesforce from $30 per user per month, on top of a DocuSign eSignature plan. DocuSign’s pricing page lists Salesforce document generation under its Enhanced plans, which are quoted by sales. Independent guides estimate $70 to $90 per user per month once the base plan, the Salesforce app and DocuSign Gen are combined. Confirm your bundle with DocuSign before budgeting.
Standard and Business Pro are self-serve eSignature plans and do not list Salesforce among their features; “Generate documents from within Salesforce” appears under Enhanced plans. In practice the Salesforce app is licensed alongside an eSignature plan through DocuSign or Salesforce sales.

Not on its own. DocuSign eSignature for Salesforce merges field values into a document you already have. Building the document from Salesforce data needs DocuSign Gen, a separate subscription, or another document tool.
Yes. Standard and Business Pro include up to 100 envelopes per user per year, and envelopes sent through the Salesforce integration count toward it. Overages are billed per envelope.
Yes. When all recipients finish signing, DocuSign saves the completed document to the record, and DocuSign Connect keeps envelope status in sync. Merge fields can write a signer’s changes back when Writeback is enabled.
